Semper Fi! Happy 240th Birthday to the United States Marine Corp (36 Photos)

240 years ago today, the Marine Corps was founded in a tiny bar in Philadelphia. Marines all over the world celebrate their founding with birthday balls, the cutting of cake, and the reading of General Lejeune’s birthday message. The symbols of the Marine Corps are known worldwide know — the eagle, globe, and anchor that make up its emblem, the motto of “Semper Fidelis”.

This year’s birthday message from the Commandant of the Marine Corps focused on “the legacy within”. Neller urged Marines to reflect on the rich and storied history of the Marine Corps, remember Marines who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and reaffirm their commitment to the Corps. After 240 years, Marines are still known as the best fighting force anywhere in the world, and every day, they still live the Corps values of honor, courage, and commitment.

Happy Birthday, Marines, and Semper Fi!
